How Many Days Do You Need in Meghalaya?

Updated 30 June 2026 6 min read

One of the first questions every traveller asks — and getting it wrong means either a rushed, exhausting trip or wasted days. Here is a realistic answer based on the actual hill-road driving times, not an over-packed brochure plan.

Quick answer

5 days is the practical minimum for a first Meghalaya trip covering Shillong, Cherrapunji (Sohra) and Dawki–Mawlynnong. 6–7 days is the ideal, adding a slower pace plus Jowai (Krang Suri), the Nongriat double-decker trek or Mawphlang. Allow 10–14 days if you want offbeat Garo Hills (Wari Chora) or a relaxed family pace. Remember the Guwahati arrival/departure drive (~100–120 km, 3–3.5 hrs each way) effectively uses up half a day on each end.

Offbeat / Garo Hills10–14 days

Is 3 to 4 days enough for Meghalaya?

Three to four days is enough for a focused first taste: arrive in Shillong, spend a day on local sights (Elephant Falls, Shillong Peak, Ward's Lake, Police Bazar), and do one full Cherrapunji day (Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Cave, Seven Sisters Falls). It works if you fly in and out of Guwahati with an early start, but you will not have time for Dawki or Mawlynnong, which lie in the opposite direction from Cherrapunji.

If your only goal is Shillong and the Sohra waterfalls, 3–4 days is fine. If you have come all the way to the Northeast, it is worth adding two more.

Why 5 days is the sweet spot

Five days lets you cover the three headline regions without rushing the winding roads: a Shillong day, a full Cherrapunji day, and a full Dawki + Mawlynnong day, with arrival and departure drives to Guwahati on the first and last days. This is the most popular structure and the one our 5-day itinerary is built around.

Crucially, Cherrapunji and Dawki are in different directions from Shillong, so they cannot be combined into one day — you need a dedicated day for each. Five days is the minimum that respects that geography.

  • Day 1: Guwahati → Shillong (Umiam Lake en route)
  • Day 2: Shillong sightseeing
  • Day 3: Cherrapunji (Sohra) waterfalls & caves
  • Day 4: Mawlynnong + Dawki (Umngot River)
  • Day 5: Shillong → Guwahati

When to go longer: 7, 10 or more days

Add a sixth and seventh day if you want to slow down or reach more: the Nongriat double-decker living root bridge trek needs a full day (often an overnight in Nongriat), and Jowai's Krang Suri and Phe Phe falls are a separate Jaintia Hills day. A week turns a checklist trip into a relaxed one.

Ten to fourteen days is for the truly offbeat — the remote Garo Hills (Wari Chora, Siju Cave), extra trekking, or a gentle family pace with rest days. Beyond a week, distances grow and a private cab with a driver who knows the remote routes becomes essential.

Frequently asked questions

How many days are enough for a Meghalaya trip?

5 days is the practical minimum to see Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki–Mawlynnong comfortably. 6–7 days is ideal if you want to add the Nongriat trek or Jowai, and 10–14 days for offbeat Garo Hills.

Is 3 days enough for Meghalaya?

Three days covers Shillong and a Cherrapunji day trip, but not Dawki or Mawlynnong, which need a separate day in the opposite direction. It is a focused taste rather than a full trip.

Can I see Cherrapunji and Dawki in one day?

No. Cherrapunji (Sohra) and Dawki lie in opposite directions from Shillong, so each needs its own day. Plans that combine them in a single day are unrealistic given the hill-road driving times.

How much time does the Guwahati to Shillong drive take?

About 100–120 km and 3 to 3.5 hours each way, so plan for the arrival and departure days to be partly used up by the transfer.
