    A full-day taxi is the easiest way to see Shillong itself. A typical day starts at Umiam Lake or the Don Bosco Museum, goes up to Shillong Peak and Elephant Falls, and ends at Ward’s Lake and Police Bazaar. Add Laitlum Canyons at sunrise or late afternoon for the best views.

    Plan around closing days: Ward’s Lake is usually closed on Tuesdays and the Don Bosco Museum on Sundays. Your driver knows these and orders the stops to avoid the worst of the city traffic around Police Bazaar.

    Getting around

    Taxi, shared cab or scooty?

    Shared taxis run between Shillong and towns such as Guwahati and Sohra, leaving from stands once every seat is sold, but they do not go to the viewpoints, falls and caves. For sightseeing you need a private car.

    Inside Shillong, local taxis are not metered, so agree the fare first. If you would rather ride yourself, a scooty is a cheap way to see the city on a dry day.
