About the Shillong–Guwahati route

The road back to Guwahati is mostly downhill. From Shillong, at roughly 1,500 m, NH6 drops past Umiam Lake and through Nongpoh to the plains at Byrnihat, then crosses into Assam at Jorabat. The hill section comes first, while you are fresh; drivers take the bends in a low gear, and anyone prone to motion sickness is better off in the front seat with a light breakfast.

The part to plan around is the end, not the hills. Jorabat junction, where the Meghalaya highway meets the Guwahati bypass, and the city traffic through Khanapara and GS Road towards Paltan Bazaar can turn the last 20 km into an hour on a busy weekday evening. That is why we time pickups backwards from your train, not forwards from breakfast.

We drop at Guwahati Railway Station (GHY, Paltan Bazaar side), Kamakhya Junction, the Paltan Bazaar bus and shared-taxi area, or any hotel or address in Guwahati city. If you are catching a flight, book the Shillong to Guwahati Airport cab instead: the airport is about 123 km from Shillong and has its own fare.

When to leave Shillong to catch a train in Guwahati

Leave Shillong at least 4 to 4.5 hours before your train is due to depart: 3 to 3.5 hours for the drive, plus a buffer for Jorabat and time to find your platform. Add another hour for evening departures or in the monsoon, when landslide clearances and fog can slow the hill section.

Long-distance trains from Guwahati include the Saraighat Express and the Rajdhani services, but timetables change, so check your train time and departure station before booking. Some trains leave from Kamakhya Junction rather than Guwahati station; tell us which one and the driver goes straight there.

Shared taxi or private cab to Guwahati?

Shared taxis to Guwahati leave from central Shillong and charge roughly ₹400 to ₹600 per seat; this is an approximate local rate, not our fare. They leave only when full, so the departure time is uncertain, which is a risk when you have a train to catch. They drop at a fixed stand, usually around Paltan Bazaar.

A private cab collects you from your Shillong hotel or homestay at the time you choose and drops you at the station entrance or your hotel. For 3 or 4 people, a sedan at ₹2,700 is about ₹675 to ₹900 each.
