The drive
About the Guwahati–Shillong route
Shillong sits about 100 km south-east of Guwahati city, in the Khasi Hills. The road is NH6 all the way: out of Guwahati through Khanapara, across the Assam–Meghalaya border at Jorabat, past the Byrnihat industrial belt, through Nongpoh, and then up the hill section past Umiam (Barapani) Lake into Shillong. The first hour is flat and busy; the last part climbs steadily through pine forest.
The usual time is 3 to 3.5 hours. The slowest stretch is normally not the hills but the Jorabat junction and the trucks around Byrnihat, which can add 30 minutes or more at busy times. Fog on the upper section in the monsoon and in winter evenings also slows things down, which is why our drivers prefer to reach Shillong in daylight.
Most travellers start from one of three places: Guwahati Railway Station (GHY, Paltan Bazaar), Kamakhya Junction, or Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU). A city or station pickup is about 100 km and starts from ₹2,700. The airport is on the far western side of Guwahati, about 123 km from Shillong, so airport pickups have their own fare starting from ₹3,000.
Pick a Dzire for up to 4 people with normal luggage, a Ciaz for more legroom and boot space, a Brezza if you want a little more room, an Ertiga for 5 to 6, or an Innova for families with big bags. Every fare is one way, so you never pay for the empty return leg, and the price is confirmed before you pay.

Best time to leave Guwahati for Shillong
Leave Guwahati in the morning, roughly between 7 and 10 am. You clear Jorabat before traffic builds, have daylight for the Umiam Lake stop, and reach your Shillong hotel by early afternoon.
Afternoon and evening departures are fine and we run them every day, but in winter it gets dark in Shillong as early as 4:30 to 5 pm, so the hill section is driven at night. If your train or flight lands late, a pre-booked cab saves you from bargaining at the rank, and the driver takes the hill road slowly in the dark.

Shared taxi vs private cab from Guwahati to Shillong
Shared taxis (mostly Sumos and similar SUVs) leave from the Paltan Bazaar area near Guwahati Railway Station. A seat costs roughly ₹400 to ₹600 depending on the season and the vehicle; this is an approximate local rate, not our fare. The taxi leaves when it is full, drops everyone at a stand in central Shillong, has limited space for luggage and does not stop for sightseeing.
A private cab picks you up at the station exit, airport arrivals or your hotel, leaves when you want, stops at Umiam Lake on request and drops you at your Shillong hotel door. For 3 or 4 people, a sedan at ₹2,700 works out to about ₹675 to ₹900 per person.
