Nongjrong is a small Khasi village in the Mawkynrew block of East Khasi Hills, about 54 km from Shillong, famous for one thing: on clear winter mornings the valleys below fill with cloud and the sun comes up over a white sea. It is real, it is beautiful, and it is easy to get wrong: arrive half an hour late, or on the wrong morning, and you see fog. Here is exactly when to leave Shillong, what the drive is like in the dark, where to stand, where to stay and what it costs, from a Shillong operator whose drivers do this run before dawn all winter.
Quick answer
Nongjrong is 54 km from Police Bazar, Shillong: about 2 hours 20 minutes by car (allow 2½ hours in the dark), via the Mawkynrew road. The sea-of-clouds sunrise happens on clear, still mornings from October to February, best in November–January. Sunrise is around 5:30 AM in early November, 6:00 AM in mid-December and 6:10 AM in January, so leave Shillong between about 2:45 and 3:20 AM, or sleep in a village homestay the night before. The viewpoint is a short walk from the road; no permit is needed. A private car with driver for the morning starts from ₹5,472, and it pairs well with Laitlum Canyons (33 km away) on the way back.

What you actually see at Nongjrong
Nongjrong sits on a ridge above deep valleys that drain south towards the Bangladesh plains. On a cold, clear, windless night, moist air settles into those valleys and condenses into a flat layer of cloud. From the viewpoint you look down on it: hilltops stick out like islands, and the sun rises over the far edge. On the best mornings it lasts 30 to 60 minutes before the cloud breaks up.
It does not happen every morning. You need a clear sky above and still air; after rain, or when a weather system brings thick fog, you can be inside the cloud and see nothing. November to January gives the most good mornings. In the monsoon (June to September) it is mostly rain and fog.
Sunrise time and when to leave Shillong, month by month
Aim to be at the viewpoint about 30 minutes before sunrise: the cloud sea is often at its best in the blue light just before the sun clears the horizon. These are sunrise times for Nongjrong (IST) and the latest sensible departure from Police Bazar, allowing about 2½ hours for the drive in the dark.
| Month | Sunrise (approx.) | Leave Shillong by | Chance of a cloud sea |
|---|---|---|---|
| October | 5:10 – 5:20 AM | 2:15 AM | Fair; skies clearing after the monsoon |
| November | 5:30 – 5:45 AM | 2:35 AM | Good; peak season begins |
| December | 5:50 – 6:00 AM | 2:55 AM | Best; cold, clear, still mornings |
| January | 6:05 – 6:10 AM | 3:10 AM | Very good; coldest mornings |
| February | 5:55 – 6:05 AM | 3:00 AM | Good early in the month, hazier later |
| March – September | 4:40 – 5:45 AM | — | Low; haze in spring, rain and fog in the monsoon |
- Check the forecast the evening before: a clear night with low wind is what you want.
- If you would rather not start at 3 AM, sleep in Nongjrong the night before and walk to the viewpoint at 5.
The drive: Shillong to Nongjrong
The route leaves Shillong towards Mawkynrew on the district road and climbs through pine forest and small villages. It is 54 km to the viewpoint and Google estimates 2 hours 17 minutes by day. In the dark, on narrow hill roads with fog patches, allow 2½ hours. The last stretch is narrow but paved; ordinary cars manage it in dry weather.
Drive yourself only if you know hill roads at night. Most visitors book a car with a local driver who knows the turns and can wait while you watch the sunrise. There are no shops open on the way at 3 AM, so carry water and something warm to drink.
At the Nongjrong viewpoint
The viewpoint is a short walk from where cars park, on open grassy ground at the edge of the ridge. It is uneven and dark before dawn, so bring a torch or use your phone light. In peak season the best spots fill early on weekends, another reason to arrive before first light.
It is cold: around 4–8°C before sunrise in December and January, with wind on the ridge. Wear a proper jacket, a cap and gloves; a thermos of tea helps. A small fee is sometimes collected by the village for parking or upkeep; keep some cash. Please take all your rubbish back with you.
Where to stay: Nongjrong homestays near the viewpoint
A cluster of family homestays sits within a few minutes' walk of the viewpoint. Staying the night means no 3 AM drive, a second chance if the first morning is foggy, and time to walk the village. Rooms are simple; hot water and power can be limited; dinner and breakfast are home-cooked if you ask ahead. These are the best-reviewed ones on Google Maps, with the walking time to the viewpoint:
| Homestay | Google rating (reviews) | Walk to viewpoint |
|---|---|---|
| Iohhun's Sunrise Homestay | 4.9 (346) | 1 min |
| MumSunshine Homestay | 4.6 (37) | 2 min |
| Lara Homestay (beside the Presbyterian church) | 4.7 (28) | 3 min |
| Hala Rympei Homestay | 4.9 (82) | 5 min |
| Um-Ngot View Homestay | 4.5 (27) | 5 min |
| Ribha Homestay | 4.4 (11) | 5 min |
| Ritz Homestay | 4.3 (56) | 6 min |
| Pamela's Mountain View Homestay | 4.8 (209) | 11 min |
- Ratings and walking times from Google Maps, November 2026; they change, so check recent reviews before booking.
- Book directly and early for weekends from November to January, which fill up.
- There is no ATM in the village and mobile signal is patchy: carry cash from Shillong and save offline maps.
- Staying over? Our car can drop you the evening before and collect you after breakfast for Laitlum and Shillong.
Where to eat at Nongjrong
There are no restaurants at Nongjrong: Google Maps lists only one small café in the village. Homestays cook dinner and breakfast for their guests (tell them the evening before), and some will make tea for early visitors. If you are coming from Shillong for the sunrise, bring a thermos and breakfast; the first proper meal on the day trip is usually on the way back, with tea stalls at Laitlum and plenty of food in Shillong.
How to reach Nongjrong from airports and stations
There is no bus or shared taxi to Nongjrong, and none runs before dawn. Everyone comes by car through Shillong. Measured to the viewpoint on Google Maps:
| From | Distance | Drive time (day) |
|---|---|---|
| Police Bazar, Shillong | 54 km | 2 h 17 min (2½ h at night) |

- Arriving at Guwahati? Spend the first night in Shillong and do the sunrise the next morning; the 5-hour drive straight to Nongjrong arrives long after sunrise.
Pair it with Laitlum Canyons
Laitlum Canyons is 35 km (about 1 hour 25 minutes) from Nongjrong on the Jongksha–Mawkynrew road, and about an hour from Shillong. Watch the sunrise at Nongjrong, have breakfast, then reach Laitlum by mid-morning while the canyon is still clear, and be back in Shillong by early afternoon. It is the best use of a pre-dawn start.
Treks and waterfalls near Nongjrong
Paths from the village lead down to streams and small waterfalls, often called the Nongjrong falls, a few hours' round walk that suits people who are reasonably fit. Since June 2025 East Khasi Hills requires a registered local guide for treks and outdoor activities; ask in the village or at your homestay. The viewpoint itself does not need a guide.
Cost of a Nongjrong trip
A private car with driver for the morning (Shillong → Nongjrong sunrise → Laitlum → Shillong) costs from ₹5,472 for a sedan, ₹6,192 for an SUV and ₹7,920 for an Innova. That is for the whole car, with fuel, tolls and driver included; not per person. The price includes the pre-dawn start (about 20% more than a normal day trip). Ask for the early pickup time when you book. Shared transport does not run at this hour.
