Three kinds of quiet, chosen for your dates
By the lake at Umiam
Resorts above Umiam Lake, about 30 minutes from Shillong, such as Ri Kynjai, with Khasi-style cottages and long lake views. The calm first or last night of the trip.
In Shillong
The city's five-star hotels, such as Vivanta and Courtyard by Marriott, for good restaurants, a spa and an easy base for the day trips.
In Sohra and by the river
The best private homestays and boutique stays in Sohra (Cherrapunji) and near the Umngot River, for mornings at the waterfalls before anyone else arrives.

Umiam Lake
Met at Guwahati arrivals by your chauffeur, a quiet drive up into the hills, and two nights by the lake. Sunset over the water, then Shillong at your pace: the old town, Ward's Lake and dinner in town.
Nights 3–4
Sohra (Cherrapunji)
Nohkalikai and Seven Sisters Falls in the clear morning light, a Khasi lunch in a village home, and, for those who want it, the Double Decker root bridge with our best guide and a porter.
Night 5
Shillong
The first boat on the glass-clear Umngot at Dawki, the lanes of Mawlynnong, and a last evening in Shillong before the drive back to Guwahati.
