The drive
About the Shillong–Cherrapunji route
Cherrapunji — locally Sohra — is about 54 km south of Shillong and one of the wettest places on earth. The road climbs through the dramatic Mawkdok Dympep Valley before opening onto the Sohra plateau, with waterfalls and gorges on every side.
Many travellers hire the cab for a full day so they can cover Nohkalikai Falls, the Seven Sisters (Nohsngithiang) Falls, Mawsmai Cave, Arwah Cave and the Wei Sawdong falls at their own pace, then return to Shillong by evening. A one-way drop is also fine if you are staying overnight in Cherrapunji.
A sedan suits couples; an SUV is the comfortable choice for the winding hill road and for families wanting to add the Double Decker Living Root Bridge trek near Nongriat. Our drivers are based in Shillong, so the one-way fare already includes the empty return drive.

One-way drop or a full day in Cherrapunji?
The one-way fare from ₹2,800 drops you at your Sohra hotel or homestay; use it if you are staying the night in Cherrapunji. If you are going and coming back the same day, book a full-day sightseeing cab instead: from ₹4,560 for a Dzire, the car and driver stay with you for about 10 hours and bring you back to Shillong in the evening.
A full day comfortably covers the Mawkdok Dympep viewpoint, Wah Kaba Falls, Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Cave, Seven Sisters Falls and the Eco Park. Arwah Cave or the Wei Sawdong falls fit in if you start early.

Best time to leave Shillong for Cherrapunji
Leave Shillong by 8 or 8:30 AM. Cloud often rolls into the Sohra gorges from late morning, and Nohkalikai Falls can disappear into mist within minutes, so the earlier viewpoints usually have the clearest views.
The waterfalls are at their fullest from June to September, but rain and fog slow the road and hide the views. October to December gives the clearest skies with water still flowing.

Getting to Nongriat and the Double Decker root bridge
The Double Decker Living Root Bridge trek starts at Tyrna village, about 30 minutes past Sohra town, with roughly 3,500 steps down to Nongriat and back. It takes most of a day on its own, so it does not fit into a sightseeing day; plan it as a separate day or stay overnight in Sohra. The bridge is closed to visitors on Sundays.
