About Umiam Lake
Umiam Lake, also called Barapani ("big water"), is a reservoir in Ri-Bhoi district formed when a dam was built across the Umiam River in the early 1960s for a hydroelectric project. It lies beside the Shillong–Guwahati highway, so most travellers see it on the way into or out of Shillong. The lake spreads across a series of drowned valleys surrounded by pine-covered hills, and the highway runs above it with several roadside viewpoints. The main visitor area is the Umiam Water Sports Complex, next to the government-run Orchid Lake Resort, where boating and other water activities are run. It is a practical stop rather than a full-day destination: a good place to break the drive from Guwahati, watch the light change over the water at sunrise or sunset, or take a short boat ride. Several resorts and cafés around the lake also make it a quieter base than central Shillong.

The road passes the lake and the dam area at Barapani; the water sports complex and Orchid Lake Resort are signposted just off the highway. No walking is needed beyond the parking area. A private cab from Shillong can be booked with Tour Meghalaya, and the lake fits easily into a Guwahati–Shillong transfer.
