About Spread Eagle Falls
Spread Eagle Falls is a waterfall on the edge of central Shillong, in the cantonment area on the Laitumkhrah side of the city. Its English name comes from its shape: the water spreads across a broad rock face in a form that people compare to an eagle with its wings outstretched. It falls into a deep green pool. Locally it is known as Urkaliar, also spelled Umkaliar. Khasi tradition links the name to a woman called Ka Liar, who is said to have slipped and drowned in the falls, and local stories tell of her separation from the man she loved. The falls are among the closest waterfalls to the city centre, which makes them a convenient stop on a Shillong local sightseeing day rather than a dedicated excursion.
