    Overview

About Captain Williamson Sangma State Museum

The Captain Williamson Sangma State Museum is the state museum of Meghalaya, housed in the State Central Library complex near IGP Point in central Shillong. It was set up in 1975 and is named after Captain Williamson A. Sangma, Meghalaya's first Chief Minister and a leader of the movement for a separate hill state. The museum is run by the state government. Its focus is the material culture of the state's three main communities. The Khasi and Jaintia gallery holds wood carvings, handloom textiles, silver ornaments, earthen pots, musical instruments and traditional weapons such as bows, spears, swords and shields. The Garo gallery displays traditional dress, beadwork and other ornaments, and instruments including gongs, drums and flutes. There are also tools, baskets and fishing and hunting implements, along with replicas and models received from national institutions. For visitors short on time, it is one of the easiest ways to get an overview of Meghalaya's tribal heritage before heading out to villages, and it sits within walking distance of Police Bazaar and Ward's Lake.

    Best Time to Visit

    All year (weekdays)

Being indoors, the museum works in every season and is a good fallback on wet monsoon days (June to September). October to May gives drier weather for pairing it with Ward's Lake and other city sights. Go in the morning or early afternoon: sources list it closing at about 4 pm, and it is shut on Sundays and public holidays (one guide also lists Saturday as closed), so a weekday visit is safest.

    Getting There

The museum is in the State Central Library complex near IGP Point, close to Police Bazaar in central Shillong, so most visitors walk from the market area or take a short local taxi.
