Meghalaya in February: Weather, Places to Visit & Tips
February is when Meghalaya warms up after the cold of January but stays dry. Days are sunny and pleasant, nights are still chilly, and the roads are at their best before the spring showers. Here is what February is really like and how to plan it.
Quick answer
February is a very good time to visit Meghalaya. It is dry and sunny, about 8–18°C in Shillong, with cold mornings but comfortable days and almost no rain (about 15 mm all month). Roads are dry, treks are easy and crowds are lower than in the October–January peak. Waterfalls are thin at this time of year. Sunset is around 5:05–5:25 PM, so start long day trips early and carry a warm layer for mornings and evenings.

Meghalaya weather in February
February in Shillong usually means day-time highs of about 17–18°C and night-time lows of about 7–8°C. Mornings are cold, especially at Shillong Peak, Laitlum and Upper Shillong, but by late morning the sun makes it comfortable for walking. Rain is rare: Shillong gets only about 15 mm in the whole month, and even Cherrapunji (Sohra), one of the wettest places on earth, is mostly dry.
The light is clear and the skies are usually blue, which makes February a good month for viewpoints and photography. It gets a little warmer each week, and late February already feels like spring.
- Days: sunny, about 17–18°C in Shillong
- Nights: cold, about 7–8°C
- Almost no rain — about 2 rainy days in the month
- No snow; frost only on rare early mornings at high points
Best places to visit in Meghalaya in February
February suits treks, viewpoints and villages. Waterfalls are at their dry-season low, so if big waterfalls are the main reason for your trip, October (or the monsoon) is better.
- Double Decker Living Root Bridge (Nongriat): dry steps and cool trekking weather
- Laitlum Canyons and the David Scott Trail: clear views and easy walking
- Mawlynnong and the Balancing Rock: mild days near the border
- Dawki and Shnongpdeng: boating on the Umngot (see the note on water clarity below)
- Krang Suri Falls near Jowai: blue pool and an easy trail
- Shillong city: Ward's Lake, Don Bosco Museum and Police Bazar cafés
Dawki in February: what to expect
In the dry months the Umngot River at Dawki is normally clear enough to see the riverbed. Since late 2025, though, mud from the Shillong–Dawki road widening has made the water murky on some days even in the dry season, so message us before you plan a trip around clear water — our drivers are on that road every week.
Events in February: the Strawberry Festival
Meghalaya Tourism runs a Strawberry Festival in the strawberry-growing villages around this time. In 2026 it began at Smit, near Shillong, on 25–28 February, with farm visits and strawberry picking, then moved to Sohliya and Tura in early March. Dates change every year (the 2025 edition was in May), so check the announcement before you plan around it.
How to plan a February trip
February is dry, so roads are at their best. Keep Cherrapunji and Dawki on separate days — they are 2–3.5 hours from Shillong in different directions — and leave Shillong by about 7 AM for either. Note the weekly closures: Ward's Lake is closed on Tuesdays, Shillong Peak on Wednesdays, and the Double Decker root bridge trail and Don Bosco Museum on Sundays.
- Carry a warm layer for mornings and evenings
- Plan treks for February — dry steps, cool air
- Book a car with a driver for the whole trip so day trips start early
