About Wahrashi Falls (Syntung)
Wahrashi Falls is a series of waterfalls on a stream near Syntung village in the Mawkynrew area of East Khasi Hills. Although it is often mentioned alongside Jaintia Hills attractions, it lies in East Khasi Hills, about 63 km from Shillong. The stream drops through a chain of tiers; sources count eight or nine stages. Only one tier, usually described as the third, is open to visitors for close access. The other tiers can be seen from the path and from an observation tower but are not reachable on foot. The pool at the open tier is clear in the dry months, and the large boulders around it are used as a picnic spot. Wahrashi gets far fewer visitors than the falls around Sohra, mainly because the approach road is poor. That keeps it quiet, but it also means there are no restaurants nearby, so it suits travellers who are happy to carry their own food and spend most of a day on the trip.

Winter (December to February) has clear water and is the most comfortable for sitting by the pool, though the flow is lower. The monsoon (June to September) brings the most water, but the road gets worse, fog can cut visibility sharply and the steps are slippery. Start early from Shillong so you are back on the main road before dark.
