    Overview

    About Wah Umngot

Wah Umngot, the Umngot River, runs through the valley that separates the Khasi and Jaintia Hills before flowing into the plains of Bangladesh. The stretch most visitors see lies between Dawki, on the India–Bangladesh border, and Shnongpdeng village about 8 km upstream, in West Jaintia Hills district. In the dry months the water is clear enough that boats appear to float above the riverbed, and Meghalaya Tourism cites visibility of up to about 30 feet. Shnongpdeng is the quieter base for spending time on the river rather than just taking a boat ride. Campsites line the riverbank, and local operators run snorkelling, kayaking, cliff jumping and, at times, scuba diving. A suspension bridge across the river gives a view of the whole bend. Clarity depends on season and on what is happening upstream. During the monsoon the river runs fast and silty, and in late 2025 construction work on the Shillong–Dawki road was reported to have kept the water murky after the season it would normally clear. Check recent photos or ask locally before planning a trip around the colour of the water.

    On the day

What to expect at Wah Umngot

Riverbank: A rocky, open river valley with green hills on both sides; the clearest pools are where the current slows. Camping: Tents are set up along the Shnongpdeng riverbank, often with bonfires; book ahead in winter, the busiest season. Water activities: Snorkelling, kayaking, cliff jumping and canoe rides are run by local operators and charged separately; life jackets are provided. Suspension bridge: A footbridge over the Umngot at Shnongpdeng for views up and down the river. Facilities: Homestays, simple eateries and parking near the river; network coverage can be patchy.

    Visitor Information

    Best Time to Visit

November to February for the clearest water; avoid June–September

November to February usually gives the clearest water and is the main camping season, with cool nights and dry days. March to May stays warm and suits swimming and water sports, though pre-monsoon showers can cloud the river. June to September is monsoon: the river runs high, fast and muddy, and some activities pause. Within a day, late morning to early afternoon is best, when the sun is high enough to light the riverbed and show the water's clarity.

    Getting There

Shnongpdeng and Dawki are about 80–90 km from Shillong, a drive of roughly 2.5 to 3 hours along NH206 through Pynursla.

Shnongpdeng and Dawki are about 80–90 km from Shillong, a drive of roughly 2.5 to 3 hours along NH206 through Pynursla. The road descends steeply in the last stretch toward the border. Dawki town sits right on the river; for Shnongpdeng, take the turn-off before Dawki and drive about 8 km to the village, where a short walk leads down to the riverbank and campsites. There is no direct public transport to Shnongpdeng, so most visitors come by car. A private cab from Shillong can be booked with Tour Meghalaya, either as a day trip or with an overnight stay at Shnongpdeng.

    Entry & Duration

Entry Fee: Approximately free to visit the riverbank; camping and water activities are charged separately (2024 report)

A day trip from Shillong gives you a few hours on the river, but Meghalaya Tourism suggests at least two days if you want to camp at Shnongpdeng and try the water activities.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wah Umngot the same as Dawki river?

Yes. Wah Umngot is the local name of the Umngot River, which flows past Dawki and Shnongpdeng; many travellers simply call it the Dawki river.

When is the Umngot river clear?

The water is usually clearest from November to February, after the monsoon silt settles. During June to September it turns muddy, and in late 2025 upstream road construction also affected clarity, so check recent reports before you go.

    Can you camp at Shnongpdeng?

Yes. Several campsites operate on the Shnongpdeng riverbank, with tents and bonfires; winter is the main camping season and is best booked in advance.

Can you do snorkelling in Shnongpdeng?

Yes, local operators offer snorkelling, and Meghalaya Tourism also lists scuba diving and kayaking on the Umngot. Visibility is best in the dry winter months.

How far is Shnongpdeng from Shillong?

Shnongpdeng is about 80–90 km from Shillong, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by road via NH206, and about 8 km from Dawki.

Is Dawki and Shnongpdeng possible in one day from Shillong?

Yes, as a long day trip, though most of the day goes into driving. An overnight stay at Shnongpdeng gives more time on the river.
