    Overview

    About Balancing Rock of Mawlynnong

The Balancing Rock, known locally as Maw Ryngkew Sharatia, is a natural rock formation on the edge of Mawlynnong village in East Khasi Hills. A large, rounded boulder sits on a much smaller rock, so from most angles it looks as if it could tip over at any moment. It is the result of natural weathering and erosion, and the site is believed by some locals to have been an old Khasi shrine. For photos, the rock is easy to recognise: a grey, lichen-streaked boulder on a narrow stone pedestal, surrounded by trees, betel nut palms and village greenery. The best shot is a low side angle that shows the gap between the boulder and its base clearly; a slightly wider frame with a person standing beside it (not on it) gives a sense of scale. Overcast light, common here, suits close-up shots of the rock texture. The rock is a short stop usually combined with a walk through Mawlynnong, which is known for its clean, well-kept lanes, the bamboo Sky View tower and the Riwai living root bridge nearby. Visitors are asked not to climb on or disturb the rock.
