About Byrdaw Falls

Byrdaw Falls lies near Pomshutia, a village in the Pynursla subdivision of East Khasi Hills, off the Shillong–Dawki road and a few kilometres before Dawki. It is fed by forest streams, so its character changes sharply with the season: a wide, heavy cascade in the monsoon and a much thinner flow by late winter. The falls are still lightly visited compared with the Sohra waterfalls. There is no fencing, railing or built viewpoint, and very few facilities, which is part of the appeal for people who want a quieter stop on the way to Dawki or Mawlynnong. The surroundings are green hillside and forest rather than a developed park, so it feels closer to a village walk than a tourist site, and you may have the falls largely to yourself outside weekends and holidays. Because it sits on the same road as Dawki, Shnongpdeng and the Mawlynnong turn-off, Byrdaw fits easily into a day trip from Shillong to the Umngot River area.

What to expect at Byrdaw Falls

Walk: From the village road a footpath leads to the falls. Accounts differ on its length (from a short walk to around 2 km), so ask in Pomshutia before setting off. Viewpoint: Natural rock and grass, with no fencing or concrete platforms. Keep well back from the edge. Facilities: Very limited. Carry water and snacks, as there are no regular stalls at the falls. Water: Swimming near the falls is not advised, especially when the flow is strong. Nearby: Dawki and the Umngot River, Shnongpdeng, Mawlynnong.

Visitor Information

Best Time to Visit

July to November

The monsoon (June–September), especially July to September, gives the fullest flow, but the path gets slippery and heavy rain can make the approach unsafe. Post-monsoon (October–November) is a good balance of strong water, clearer skies and drier footing. In winter and spring (December–May) the flow drops considerably. Visit in the morning or early afternoon and leave before dark, as there is no lighting on the path.

Public transport beyond Pynursla is irregular, so most visitors come by car or taxi as part of a Dawki day trip. A private cab from Shillong can be booked with Tour Meghalaya. From the road, the last stretch to the falls is on foot along a village path, which can be slippery after rain. Local residents can point out the trailhead.
