Meghalaya in April: Weather, Festivals & Places to Visit

Updated 18 October 2026 5 min read

April is late spring in Meghalaya: green hills, warm days and the Khasi festival of Shad Suk Mynsiem in Shillong. It is also when pre-monsoon storms start, so it pays to plan your days around the weather. Here is what April is like.

Quick answer

April is a good time to visit Meghalaya, especially for greenery and the Shad Suk Mynsiem festival in Shillong. It is warm — about 14–23°C in Shillong — with pre-monsoon showers and evening thunderstorms becoming common (about 130 mm in Shillong, much more in Cherrapunji). Mornings are usually the clearest. Meghalaya weather in April

Shillong in April usually reaches about 23°C in the day and drops to about 14°C at night. This is when the pre-monsoon season begins: Shillong averages around 130 mm of rain over about 10 rainy days, and Cherrapunji several times that. Rain tends to come as afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms rather than all-day downpours.

Mornings are often bright and clear, and the countryside is at its greenest so far. Sunrise is early — around 5 AM — so an early start gives you the best weather of the day.

  • Days: warm, about 23°C in Shillong
  • Nights: mild, about 14°C
  • Afternoon and evening storms become common
  • Early sunrise (about 5 AM) — start early

Shad Suk Mynsiem: Shillong's spring dance festival

Shad Suk Mynsiem ("dance of the joyful hearts") is the main Khasi spring festival, held at Weiking Ground in Jaiaw, Shillong, by the Seng Khasi. It runs over three days and visitors are welcome to watch the dancers in traditional dress. In 2026 it was held on 11–13 April with more than 1,500 dancers. The dates are fixed each year by the organisers and announced closer to the time, and other districts hold their own celebrations later (some in early May).

Best places to visit in Meghalaya in April

Plan the big outdoor sights for the morning and keep afternoons flexible in case of a storm.

  • Shillong: Shad Suk Mynsiem (if your dates match), Ward's Lake, Don Bosco Museum
  • Cherrapunji (Sohra): waterfalls start to come back; go early before clouds
  • Laitlum Canyons on a clear morning
  • Mawlynnong and Dawki in one day (water clarity changes with rain)
  • Krang Suri Falls near Jowai; the Pnar sowing festival Chad Sukra is held in Jowai around April–May

Dawki in April

Early April can still bring clear water at Dawki, but as the pre-monsoon rain picks up the river gets murkier. On top of that, since late 2025 silt from the Shillong–Dawki road widening has made the water murky on some days even in the dry season. Ask us for the current state before you plan the trip around clear water.

How to plan an April trip

Start early, keep Cherrapunji and Dawki on separate days, and avoid driving the hill roads late at night in heavy rain. A car with a local driver for the whole trip lets you shift a day around if a storm rolls in.

  • Leave Shillong by 7 AM for day trips
  • Carry a rain jacket and shoes with grip
  • Keep one flexible day in a 5–6 day plan
