Upper Shillong Forest is the belt of pine woodland around Law Sohtun in Upper Shillong, on the high ground south of the city. It is part of a larger block of protected forest that includes the Upper Shillong Protected Forest and the adjoining Riat Laban and Laitkor forests, which have been managed for more than a century and act as a water catchment for Shillong. The forest sits at roughly 1,800–1,960 m, among the highest parts of the Meghalaya plateau. Most of it is Khasi pine (Pinus kesiya), with broadleaf trees, oak and rhododendron along streams and on the eastern side. BirdLife lists the area as an Important Bird Area, with nearly 80 bird species recorded, so early mornings are good for birdwatching. Most visitors come for an unhurried walk under the pines, a picnic, or a stop on the way to the Air Force Museum, Shillong Peak or Elephant Falls, all in the same part of Upper Shillong. It is a natural forest, not a landscaped park, so expect few facilities and carry your rubbish back with you.
