Shillong Peak

Shillong Peak rises to about 1,965 metres (roughly 6,450 ft), the highest point in Meghalaya. It overlooks Shillong from the south-west, and the viewpoint near the summit looks across the city, the surrounding pine-covered ridges and, on clear days, the hills toward Umiam. It is one of the few places where you can see most of Shillong at once. In Khasi tradition the peak is linked to U Shyllong, a guardian spirit of the area, and the city's name is commonly traced to it. Locals have long regarded the hill as protecting the city below. The peak sits inside an Indian Air Force station, which shapes the whole visit. Entry is through a security gate and you must show valid photo ID. Private vehicles are usually stopped short of the top, and visitors continue in designated local vehicles. Foreign nationals and NRIs may be refused entry. Rules can change at short notice for security reasons, and access has been suspended during past security alerts. The peak is closed on Wednesdays.

Security check: Show original photo ID at the Air Force gate. Photographing the Air Force installations is not allowed, so follow the instructions at the checkpoint. Transfer: Private cars are generally parked below, and the last stretch is done in designated local taxis for an extra fee. Viewpoint: A railed platform with views over Shillong. Coin-operated or paid telescopes are sometimes available. Stalls: Small snack and tea stalls, plus stalls renting traditional Khasi dress for photos. Weather: It is windy and noticeably colder than the city, so carry a jacket.
