About Mawphlang Sacred Forest
Mawphlang Sacred Forest, known locally as Law Lyngdoh, is a sacred grove in Mawphlang village, East Khasi Hills, about 25 km south-west of Shillong. The Khasi community has protected it for generations as a place of worship, and parts of the grove are still used for traditional rituals and offerings. Local belief holds that the forest is guarded by a deity, and sacred areas remain reserved for the community. The forest is worth visiting because it is one of the best-known examples of how Khasi customs have kept a patch of old-growth forest intact. Inside are dense, moss-covered trees, ferns, orchids and fungi, and on the grassland around the village stand rows of stone monoliths, some commemorative and some ritual. The main rule is strict and widely reported: nothing may be taken out of the forest, not even a leaf, twig or pebble. Cutting, grazing and littering are prohibited, and plastic should not be carried in. Mawphlang is also the starting point of the David Scott Trail, an old colonial-era route that trekkers walk towards Lad Mawphlang and beyond.

During the monsoon (June–September) the forest is at its lushest, but trails become muddy and slippery and leeches are common, so carry rain gear and good footwear. Morning visits are best, as walks finish by late afternoon and light under the canopy fades early.

A private cab from Shillong can be booked with Tour Meghalaya, and Mawphlang is often combined with Laitlum Canyons or a drive towards Sohra.
