About Mawjymbuin Cave

Mawjymbuin Cave (Krem Mawjymbuin) is a limestone cave near Mawsynram in East Khasi Hills, the area often described as one of the wettest places on earth. Its wide mouth, about 46 m across, opens into a lit chamber, and the main feature is a squat stalagmite roughly a metre high, kept wet by water dripping from a stalactite above it. Hindu visitors regard the stalagmite as a Shivling and the stalactite as a cow's udder, and a yearly yatra comes to the cave during the month of Shravan (July–August). Geologists describe the formations as stalagmites built up by mineral-rich water depositing calcium carbonate, and the cave is a regular stop for geology field trips. The local village council has placed limits on religious activity and littering at the site. The cave is small and takes little time to see. Most visitors pair it with Mawsynram village and the nearby viewpoints on a half-day or full-day trip from Shillong.

What to expect at Mawjymbuin Cave

Cave chamber: A short cave with a wide entrance; no long crawl or technical caving. Main formation: A stalagmite about a metre high beneath a dripping stalactite, at the centre of the chamber; smaller stalactites and stalagmites line the walls. Floor: Wet and slippery underfoot, especially after rain; wear shoes with good grip. Crowds: Usually quiet, but very crowded during Shravan (July–August) when pilgrims visit. Lighting: The main chamber and a passage behind it are electrically lit, so a torch is optional. Nearby: Mawsynram village and valley viewpoints along the same road.
