About Garden Of Caves
The Garden of Caves was once a remote, dense forest deeply sacred to the Khasi community. During British colonial times, the caves and jungle served as a hiding place for locals. In 2010, the Meghalaya Forest Department transformed the untouched land into an eco-tourism park to promote nature-based tourism while preserving its cultural heritage. Visitors can explore: Limestone caves like Ka Synrang Syiem (King’s Cave) with unique rock formations Waterfalls such as Arsdad, Riat Umlwai, and Sum Syiem Falls Um Dawai Spring, known for its pure water and spiritual significance A bamboo suspension bridge across forested valleys Natural rock features like Ki Stieh Maw (Stone Shields) and hanging roots The park offers serene walking trails through mossy rocks, cold springs, and evergreen jungle, blending natural beauty with Khasi folklore. Getting There
Located around 15 km from Cherrapunjee and 60 km from Shillong, the Garden of Caves is best accessed via road. You can reach it by taxi, private car, or using local cab services like TourMeghalaya.
From Shillong, take NH6 towards Cherrapunjee, then turn at Laitmawsiang village to reach the Garden of Caves. The roads are motorable and scenic. From Guwahati, drive to Shillong first (approx. 3 hours), then follow the route to Cherrapunjee. From Cherrapunjee, the site is just a 30-minute drive. TourMeghalaya offers cab services directly to the site for a comfortable and convenient journey.
