Families ask us the same two questions: will my parents manage the walking, and will the kids get bored in the car? Here is which places are easy, which to skip, and a pace that works for everyone.
Quick answer
Meghalaya works well for families with young kids and elderly parents because most famous sights are viewpoints a short walk from the car park: Umiam Lake, Nohkalikai Falls, Seven Sisters Falls, Mawkdok Valley, Laitlum (from the top), Mawlynnong village and the Dawki boat ride. Skip or split up for the long stair treks: the Double Decker root bridge (about 3,000–3,500 steps), the Laitlum stairs to Rasong (about 3,000) and Wei Sawdong. Plan 2–3 stops a day, base in Shillong, keep drives under 3 hours, and pick a roomy car: an Ertiga (₹5,760 a day) or Innova (₹6,600 a day) for 5–7 people. October–April is the most comfortable season.

Easy places (little or no walking)
These are all close to where the car parks, with paved paths or a few steps. Toilets and tea stalls are usually nearby.
| Place | Walking | Why families like it |
|---|---|---|
| Umiam Lake | Flat viewpoints | On the way from Guwahati; boating for kids |
| Nohkalikai Falls viewpoint | Short paved walk | India's tallest plunge waterfall from a railing |
| Seven Sisters Falls (Mawsmai) | Roadside viewpoint | Best in and after the monsoon |
| Mawkdok Dympep Valley | Roadside viewpoint | Easy first stop on the Sohra road |
| Mawlynnong village | Flat village paths | Clean, quiet, safe for kids to walk around |

| Ward's Lake & Shillong Peak | Flat paths / viewpoint | Gentle half day in the city |
Moderate: fine for most, not for weak knees
Mawsmai Cave is a lit 150 m walk-through cave with low, wet sections where you bend and squeeze; kids love it, but skip it with bad knees or a fear of tight spaces. Elephant Falls in Shillong has stairs down to the lower falls; the top viewpoint is enough for grandparents. The Riwai root bridge near Mawlynnong is a short walk on uneven steps and is the easy way to see a living root bridge.
Skip or split up for these
The Double Decker root bridge at Nongriat is about 3,000–3,500 steep steps down and the same back up, 5–7 hours. The stairs from Laitlum down to Rasong village are about 3,000 steps. Wei Sawdong has a steep, slippery path. If some of the group are keen, they can go with a registered guide while the others rest at the hotel or enjoy the viewpoints from the top.
- Double Decker root bridge: ~3,000–3,500 steps each way
- Laitlum stairs to Rasong: ~3,000 steps (the view from the top needs none)
- Wei Sawdong: steep and slippery
- Instead: Riwai root bridge near Mawlynnong, a short easy walk
A gentle 5-day family plan
Each day has 2–3 stops and no more than about 3 hours in the car. Nights in Shillong mean the same hotel all trip, so no daily packing.
| Day | Plan | Drive |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Guwahati → Shillong, stop at Umiam Lake; evening at Police Bazar | 3–3.5 hrs |
| 2 | Shillong: Ward's Lake, Shillong Peak, Elephant Falls (top viewpoint) | Short city drives |
| 3 | Cherrapunji: Mawkdok Valley, Nohkalikai, Seven Sisters Falls | 1.5–2 hrs each way |
| 4 | Mawlynnong village, Riwai root bridge, Dawki boat ride | 2.5–3 hrs each way |
| 5 | Slow breakfast, Shillong → Guwahati | 3–3.5 hrs |
Car, food and health tips
- Car: a Dzire (₹4,560 a day) fits 4 with light luggage; take an Ertiga (₹5,760) or Innova (₹6,600) for 5–7 people or prams and big bags.
- Motion sickness: the Sohra and Dawki roads have many bends; carry tablets and ask the driver to stop when needed.
- Food: Shillong has plenty of North and South Indian and vegetarian food; in villages it is simpler, so carry snacks for kids.
- Health: Shillong has the main hospitals; beyond it, pharmacies are few, so bring regular medicines.
- Clothes: Shillong is cool all year and cold in December–January (about 4–16°C); bring layers and rain covers.
