Is Meghalaya Safe for Tourists? Roads, Solo Women, Families & Monsoon

Yes, for most travellers, and here is the honest detail behind that answer. We drive tourists around Meghalaya every day, so this is what actually goes wrong on trips (it is rarely crime) and the simple rules that keep a trip smooth.

    Quick answer

Meghalaya is safe for tourists, including families, couples and solo women. Crime against visitors is rare, people are friendly and English is widely spoken. The real risks are practical: steep, winding hill roads, fog, landslides in the monsoon (June–September), slippery steps on treks, and patchy phone signal outside towns. Travel the hills by day with a local driver, do not trek alone (since June 2025 a registered guide is required for treks in East Khasi Hills, which includes Cherrapunji and the root bridges), carry cash, and check road updates before each day out.

Is Meghalaya safe? The short answer

For an ordinary tourist trip, yes. Shillong, Cherrapunji (Sohra), Dawki, Mawlynnong and the root bridges see lakhs of visitors a year, and almost all problems are about roads and weather, not people. Locals are used to tourists, English is an official language, and help is usually close by in villages.

Two things changed in 2025 that you should know. After a widely reported case involving honeymooners near Sohra, East Khasi Hills made registered tourist guides compulsory for treks and outdoor activities, and the state put tourist helpers at busy spots in Shillong. Both make the popular places easier and safer, not harder, to visit.

The real risks, and how to handle each

    RiskWhenWhat to do
Winding hill roadsAll yearUse a local driver who knows the road; take motion-sickness tablets if you need them
Fog and low cloudMornings and evenings, winter and monsoonFinish hill drives before dark; leave early for viewpoints
LandslidesJune – September, after heavy rainCheck road updates each morning; keep a spare day
Slippery trek stepsMonsoon, and any wet dayGrippy shoes, a guide, start by 8 AM, turn back if it pours
Strong river currentsMonsoonSwim and boat only where boatmen operate; skip it when the water is brown
No signal, no ATMOutside Shillong and Sohra townCarry cash; download offline maps; tell your driver your plan

Is Meghalaya safe for solo female travellers?

Generally, yes. Khasi and Garo society is matrilineal, women run shops and markets everywhere, and solo women travel here often. Use the same care you would anywhere: avoid empty roads and isolated viewpoints after dark, share your plans with someone, and use a known driver or registered guide rather than a stranger offering a ride or a trek.

For treks such as the Double Decker root bridge, go with the registered guides who wait at the trailhead (Tyrna for Nongriat), usually about ₹500–800. In Shillong, Police Bazar and Laitumkhrah are busy and well lit in the evening; most shops close early, by about 7–8 PM.

Is it safe to visit Meghalaya in the monsoon?

It is safe if you plan around the rain. The waterfalls are at their best from June to September, but landslides close roads for hours, and the Shillong–Dawki road via Pynursla had a landslide advisory in July 2025 while it was being widened. Treks get slippery and rivers turn brown and fast.

Keep one spare day, start early, check our live road updates each morning, and let the driver decide if a road is not safe that day. Avoid swimming and kayaking when the water is high.

Is Meghalaya safe for families, kids and elderly parents?

Yes. Most of the famous sights are viewpoints a short walk from the car park, and drives between them are 1–3 hours. The hard parts are the long stair treks (the Double Decker root bridge has about 3,000–3,500 steps), which you can simply skip. Pick a car with room to stretch, plan two or three stops a day, and carry warm layers because Shillong nights are cool even in summer.

    Permits, ID and strikes

Indian tourists do not need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Meghalaya; carry a government photo ID. Foreign tourists need a valid Indian visa and passport, and the hotel registers them. Occasionally a bandh (strike) or a local festival closes shops or roads for a day; we post these on the updates page, and the driver will re-route or swap days.

    Frequently asked questions

Is Meghalaya safe for tourists right now?

Yes. Crime against tourists is rare. Check our live updates page for road closures, strikes and weather before each day out, especially June to September.

Is Meghalaya safe for solo female travellers?

Generally yes. Women are prominent in daily life in Meghalaya and solo women travel here often. Avoid isolated places after dark and use a known driver or registered guide.

Is it safe to drive in Meghalaya at night?

Avoid it on hill roads. Fog is common, roads are narrow and unlit, and landslides are a risk in the monsoon. Plan to reach your hotel before dark.

Do I need a guide in Meghalaya?

For treks and outdoor activities in East Khasi Hills (including Cherrapunji and the root bridges), yes, a registered guide has been required since June 2025. Viewpoints and towns do not need one.

Is Meghalaya safe in the monsoon?

Yes, with care. Keep a spare day for landslide delays, start early, avoid swimming in high rivers, and follow your driver on whether a road is safe.

    Is Shillong safe at night?

Central areas like Police Bazar and Laitumkhrah are busy in the early evening. Most shops close by about 7–8 PM, so plan dinner early and take a taxi back.
