Shillong or Cherrapunji: Where Should You Base Your Trip?

Updated 30 June 2026 6 min read

Where you sleep shapes your whole Meghalaya trip — how much you drive each day, whether you beat the crowds, and what you pay. Here is a clear, local take on Shillong vs Cherrapunji (Sohra) as your base.

Quick answer

Base in Shillong for convenience (restaurants, ATMs, hospitals, the widest choice of hotels and the best roads) and in Cherrapunji (Sohra) for the waterfalls, the Nongriat trek and quiet early starts that beat the day-trip crowds. For a 5-night trip the best of both is a split: about 2 nights in Sohra and 3 nights in Shillong. Dawki is better day-tripped than used as a base.

Stay in Shillong if…

Shillong is the state capital and the logistics hub of any trip. It has by far the widest range of hotels and homestays, the best restaurants and cafés, reliable ATMs, pharmacies and hospitals, and the smoothest road access from Guwahati. If this is your first trip, you are travelling with family or elderly parents, or you simply want comfort and choice, Shillong is the easy base.

The trade-off: the headline waterfalls are in Cherrapunji, 1.5–2 hours away, so a Shillong base means a longer there-and-back drive on your Sohra sightseeing day.

  • Most hotels, restaurants and cafés
  • Reliable ATMs, pharmacies, hospitals
  • Smoothest road access from Guwahati
  • Best for families and first-timers

Stay in Cherrapunji (Sohra) if…

Sohra puts you on the doorstep of the waterfalls, caves and the Nongriat double-decker trek. The biggest advantage is timing: staying overnight lets you start sightseeing at 6–7 AM and have Nohkalikai or Mawsmai almost to yourself before the Shillong day-trippers arrive mid-morning. It also saves the 3–4 hours of daily commuting a Shillong base adds.

Accommodation here leans towards homestays and a few resorts; it is more limited and lower-key than Shillong, with weaker mobile network and fewer ATMs — carry cash. For the Nongriat trek specifically, homestays in Tyrna or down in Nongriat itself are unbeatable.

  • On the doorstep of the waterfalls & caves
  • Early starts beat the day-tripper crowds
  • Saves 3–4 hrs of daily driving
  • Tyrna / Nongriat stays = doorstep of the double-decker trek

The local recommendation: split your stay

For a typical 5-night trip you do not have to choose. Spend the first 2 nights in Cherrapunji to do the waterfalls, caves and (if you are trekking) Nongriat at a relaxed early-morning pace, then move to Shillong for 3 nights and use it as the base for the city sights and the Dawki–Mawlynnong day trip. A private cab makes the mid-trip move effortless — you keep the same driver and luggage.

Skip the idea of basing in Dawki: it is a long way out with very limited stays and weak connectivity, and is far better visited as a full day trip (usually combined with Mawlynnong).

Frequently asked questions

Should I stay in Shillong or Cherrapunji?

Stay in Shillong for convenience and choice, or Cherrapunji (Sohra) to be next to the waterfalls and beat the crowds with early starts. For a longer trip, split it: ~2 nights in Sohra and 3 in Shillong.

Is it worth staying overnight in Cherrapunji?

Yes, especially if you want to see Nohkalikai and the caves before the day-trip crowds, or do the Nongriat double-decker trek. An overnight also saves the 3–4 hour round-trip drive from Shillong.

Can I stay in Dawki?

It is possible but not recommended — stays are very limited and connectivity is weak. Dawki is best done as a full-day trip from Shillong, usually combined with Mawlynnong.

Where should I stay for the double-decker root bridge trek?

A homestay in Tyrna (the trailhead) or down in Nongriat village itself is ideal — it lets you split the steep descent and climb over two days and add Rainbow Falls.
